What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple screening measurement that estimates whether your weight is healthy relative to your height. It's calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared (kg/m²). While BMI does not directly measure body fat and doesn't account for muscle mass, it remains a widely used starting point for assessing weight-related health risk.
BMI categories for adults
- Below 18.5 — Underweight
- 18.5 – 24.9 — Normal weight
- 25 – 29.9 — Overweight
- 30 and above — Obese
Limitations
BMI is a general guideline, not a diagnosis. Athletes with high muscle mass, older adults, pregnant women, and children may need different interpretations. Always consult a healthcare professional for personalized advice.
