Ideal Weight Calculator
Estimate your ideal body weight from your height and sex using four standard formulas.
How ideal weight is calculated
Each formula starts from a base weight at a height of 5 feet (152.4 cm) and adds a fixed amount per inch above that. Results are shown in kilograms:
- Devine (1974) — Men: 50 + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft · Women: 45.5 + 2.3 kg per inch
- Robinson (1983) — Men: 52 + 1.9 kg per inch · Women: 49 + 1.7 kg per inch
- Miller (1983) — Men: 56.2 + 1.41 kg per inch · Women: 53.1 + 1.36 kg per inch
- Hamwi (1964) — Men: 48 + 2.7 kg per inch · Women: 45.5 + 2.2 kg per inch
The calculator also shows the weight range that corresponds to a healthy BMI of 18.5–24.9 for your height, which is often a more useful target than a single number.
Frequently asked questions
Why do the formulas give different answers?
They were derived from different populations and for different purposes — mostly to estimate drug doses in hospitals, not as health goals. The spread between them is a reminder that "ideal" weight is a range, not a point.
Should I aim for the exact number?
No. Body composition, age, frame size and fitness all matter. A weight anywhere inside the healthy BMI range shown here is generally considered healthy for adults. Consult a doctor or dietitian before setting weight targets, especially if you have a medical condition.
Does this work for children?
No. These formulas are for adults only. Children's healthy weight is assessed using age- and sex-specific growth charts.
